Sustainability is a topic of interest within the fashion industry currently, and rightly so! We all agree that something needs to be done. It may take the world a long time to be in a position of pure sustainability, but clearly we are making strides within the sector.
In my opinion? I think it is wrong to assume that the fashion industry can never be a full pledged sustainable sector. I truly believe that this can be done. Why you may ask?
Well… once upon a time mankind didn’t believe in ‘electricity’. YOU HEARD ME. People thought it was a ‘weird magic thing‘, and that is was a bad thing. Here we are today.. using electricity every. single. day.
What we have to realise is, that sustainability will probably take a long time to fully master it, but once we have? WOW.
We can not predict the future, but if the future is anything like the past futures, we as mankind have the power to improve the way we use materials and how we roam the earth.
A couple of months ago I started to learn more, and understand more about the importance of sustainability. I quickly found other ways to buy new clothes, instead of buying them straight from the shops. Don’t get me wrong, I have a long way to go, and some of my clothes that I have bought recently (not many though..) have been bought straight from a shop.
I have also heard people talk about how sustainable clothes are expensive. This is true, BUT ONLY for clothes that are bought straight from a sustainable brand. You can buy clothes and be sustainable, by purchasing garments from second hand or charity shops. There are some superb charity shops in pretty much every area of the country so no one has any excuse! Sometimes charity shops are cheaper too, so you’re also helping your bank!! (Bargain!.. literally!!)
What I want to end on is, I ask you not to worry and be afraid of becoming sustainable. We all have a lot more to do, but making crucial steps to become better in this area of our life, is a step itself. Don’t beat yourself up, just do your best.
If you are a person that preaches sustainability.. THAT IS GREAT!!… but please do not make people feel bad, when they buy clothes from a high street company. We all have a long way to go and simply…we don’t know peoples circumstances.
Let us have compassion, and then our compassion towards others might end up becoming the driving force for others to become compassionate towards the planet we walk upon.
This jacket and belt saddle bag was bought from a second hand Luxury brand. If you would like to know more on how I bought these products then please comment below to let me know. These were some true bargains!!
